Things are really hotting up for 2010 Grand National, now the Cheltenham Festival is over all eye’s turn to Aintree for this years big race on April 10th. And luckily for us things are really moving along with all entries and weights now declared for the race.

Generally the final line-up of 40 horses are based on the weights from the heaviest down so horses that have weighted particularly low are very unlikely to run on the day. The odds below are currently the best prices you can find for that horse with major UK Bookmakers.

There’s going to be a string of new young guns trying for the much coveted title on April 10th but don’t dismiss the old faithfuls who are still capable of causing a major upset – Comply or Die anyone??

2010 is here and with it comes a brand new Grand National and with it a new batch of horses to keep our eyes on, as well as some old faithfuls who just might still be capable of causing a major upset on Saturday April 10th at Aintree!

The steeple chase season is fast and furious and on any given Saturday a Grand National contender can really make an impact and have the bookies in a tizz as the rush to slash odds which is basically what’s happened over the Christmas and New Year.

I like to update the ante-post odds on the Grand national 2010 every few weeks just to make sure that the bookies haven’t inadvertently discovered something that could effect the race and changed the odds accordingly.

Of course, there are also a tonne of steeplechases on over the season which also impact the various chances of the horses involved and this must also be taken into account.

Even though there has been no official declaration of the entrants, and there probably won’t be until the end of January or early February, there’s no harm in keeping an eye on the front runners especially if they come from stables with are quite ‘hot’ at the moment. For example, Paul Nicholls is on an enviable winning streak so it’s always good to pay attention to the horses he may be entering…

Trained by Paul Nicholls and usually paired with jockey Sam Thomas, he is almost certainly in contention for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March but whether Thomas rides him again or Ruby Walsh changes his allegiance from Kauto Star remains to be seen. Paddy Power are sure Ruby Walsh will remain loyal to Kauto Star this March and they’re currently offering 2-9 that Ruby rides Kauto Star and 11-4 Denman. And what a pair to be able to choose from, with Kauto Star will be aiming for a third Gold Cup, and Denman for his second.

Betfair are currently taking ante-post bets on Denman to win the 2010 Grand National but I imagine that Nicholls won’t be making any kind of definite commitment on that score until much closer to the race though if he enters him the betting will go through the roof, especially as he could potentially be up against Tricky Trickster, the Nigel Twiston-Davies contender, who also heavily tipped to pull out the performance of a lifetime in the race.

21 horses will officially line up for the start of the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday 28th November at 2pm with Denman leading in both the weights and at the bookies. Final declarations were made today reducing the field from 37 potential entrants to just 21 who will compete for the £200,000 winning pot.

Whether or not you think Denman can do it again after his win in 2007, is completely up to you but if you fancy looking at some of the other hopefuls then cast your eye over the current odds with Paddy Power.

The Hennessy Gold Cup is one of the most prestigious races on the UK racing calendar and takes place every November during the Winter Festival at Newbury Racecourse. It was first run on 26 November 1960, beginning the longest unbroken commercial sponsorship in British sport.

The Gold Cup at Newbury is a 3m2½f steeple chase over 21 fences designed to test even the most competitive and on form horses. This year the prize money for the Hennessy Gold Cup is a record £200,000 as well as the race celebrating 50 years at Newbury Racecourse and this year’s renewal has attracted a bumper and quality field of entries, which has currently been whittled down to 37.

And though winning this race comes with incredible prestige for the trainer, jockey and horse, it can also be very effective at indicating who could do very well in the following Grand National.

This year is no different and with 37 horses lined up to start the Gold Cup race, quite a few of them are already being heavily backed on ante post odds with the bookmakers. Major races like the Grand National normally have very good ante post (well in advance) betting opportunities for those you like to take bigger risks than the rest of us. Of course the problem with placing a bet ante post is you are unlikely to get your stake back if your horse doesn’t run in the race. On the plus side the odds you get ante post are usually much higher than the odds you’ll find on the day of the Grand National itself.
